Pass on the Joy of Math
We invite teachers and parents to join a pre-school/home collaboration that will bring joy to a lifetime of learning math. All it takes is 10 minutes of conversation and play each day.
What are math concepts that children ages 0-5 need to know? They are concepts such as more/less, same/different and before/after. These sets of math ideas occur everywhere including play situations, but children need adults to describe and name out loud the math relationships.
Children must hear and use a new word 24 times before most of them can remember it. Teachers need help making sure abstract math concepts are named and repeated. Choose a new conversation starter each week and ask Math Talk moms and dads to repeat the same or similar words at home.
Our book, The Gift of Math, has a dozen ways for parents and teachers to turn children’s play into captivating journeys filled with numbers, shapes and stories full of math relationships.
